We at Dr. Terry Papneja’s office want to make your surgery appointment as stress free and comfortable as possible. WHAT ARE WISDOM TEETH: “Wisdom” Teeth is the name given to the last or 3rd molar in our mouth. They usually grow into the mouth in the late teens or early adulthood. The eruption of these teeth was supposed to correspond with the arrival of maturity and wisdom. In general everybody has them although some people may be missing one or more of them. DO I HAVE TO REMOVE MY WISDOM TEETH: Although Nature did design your jaw to hold exactly 32 teeth and it is possible for Wisdom Teeth to erupt into the mouth in the correct position and function, this is not usually the case. In some cases the teeth are able to erupt and function as a valuable asset, but the position of the teeth are quite far back making cleaning very difficult and the risk of cavities and infection very common and almost a guarantee. Sometimes the situation arises where the teeth remain un-erupted and are causing no problems but yet Wisdom Teeth still tend to be removed. Why is that? In many cases a regular x-ray is the only way to identify a problem with impacted teeth, even if you are not feeling any pain or experiencing any problems. A tooth becomes impacted due to lack of space in the dental arch, and it’s eruption is therefore prevented by gum, bone, another tooth or all three. Through evolution, our jaws have become smaller and most simply have no room for these “third molars” any more. Not only do we not have room for these teeth but they are simply not necessary due to our softer diet’s and better dental care and as such when they try to squeeze into our mouths and become impacted, it usually means trouble. This can manifest as gum infections, pain, possible cyst formation, crowding or damage to nearby teeth. At some point down the road a problem usually arises, it is for this reason that many specialists recommend that wisdom teeth be removed between the ages of 17 and 22 whether they are causing problems or not. The younger you are when you have your wisdom teeth removed, the less likely complications will arise with the procedure.
